5th September 2011 First Visit to LA Fitness Bayswater

Gym Location: Moscow Place, Paddington, Greater London W2, UK

On the 5th I applied for a free 3 day trial.
I took one of my friends with me to spot as I was doing bench press.

It is very much a corporate gym; I was immediately approached by the sales woman and told about how good the faculties are.

The majority of the gym is cardio stuff: treadmills, spin bikes, bikes and cross trainers. There is a very spacious warm up area full of mirrors, but all the resistance machines are bunched in to a small section in the middle of the main room, making a grotesque spectacle of those who try and use them.

The ‘free weights’ section barely cuts it, it can only be called a free weight section by definition as it lacks a good amount of weights and equipment. The rubber plating on the weight discs is falling off and lots of equipment is propped up with 1.25kg weights, trying to get one is like playing Jenga with the equipment.

The squat rack is the same old useless business with the protruding bars that are just counterproductive, there is only one flat bench and there is no space to dead lift either.

They use Techno Gym plates which are very small and don’t give a ‘feeling’ of weight when picked up.

It is too much of an ‘inner city’ gym, built for the ‘busy modern man’ and clearly doesn’t have what it takes to stand up against most other gyms or even health and fitness centres.

I still have 2 more days left on the pass, which means I will return for one more training day, just in time for my Dead Lift... should be fun, no?

  1. Dont ever let them keep your bank card for any reason. My friend was a victim of card fraud as he left his card for locker access with reception. They used his details and attempted fraud
